In Our Own Back Yard

oOn several occasions during the recent workshop in Provence, we had the opportunity to paint in the tiny hamlet where we were staying, The hamlet is called "Les Bassacs", and consists of just a handful of old houses. By "old", I mean OLD: Parts of the house I stayed in date from the 15th century!

The houses are clustered together
along a narrow walkway. Their beautiful facades and shutters present a wonderful palette of colors. Roses, lavender, oleander, and hollyhocks are lovingly tended, and grace the walkway with their scents and colors. Here is a painting I did on our free afternoon--a favorite doorway of a neighboring house.

My fellow painter Bee Givan had a room looking out over the back of the hamlet. She loved the scene, and painted the view out of her window (shown below). What a wonderful and personal memory of the time at Les Bassacs! (Again, apologies for the poor photo quality...not good lighting conditions on location).

The opposite side of Les Bassacs has a sweeping view of the valley and the distant ridges of the Luberon mountains. We painted there during the day, and also at sunset. My painting below is proof of the old adage: "Sometimes the very best things are right there in your own back yard."
