90% Perspiration

Self Portrait
Eugene Delacroix, 1837
We are all familiar with the old saying that the achievement of success is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration. Part of the deal is showing up to work, every day, whether one is feeling particularly inspired or not. I am fond of another 90/10 expression, which goes something like this:
Ninety percent of the effort goes into the last 10% of the process--in other words, the hardest part is getting the painting from the point of good to GREAT. While thinking about these things, I wanted to share a few quotes from the masters about the effort that goes into making a work of art.

From Eugene Delacroix (self portrait above): Finishing a painting demands a heart of steel: everything requires a decision, and I find difficulties where I least expect them...  It is at such moments that one fully realizes one's own weaknesses.

"Wheatfields at Auvers under Clouded Sky"
Vincent van Gogh, 1890
From Vincent van Gogh: "It is not only by yielding to one's impulses that one achieves greatness, but also by patiently filing away the steel wall that separates what one feels from what one is capable of doing."

"The Dance Class"
Edgar Degas, 1874
From Edgar Degas: "Painting is easy when you don't know how, but very difficult when you do."

Well said by all. Grant us all the courage to carry on!!
